Middle aged women experiencing perimenopause symptoms in UK

Have you found yourself crying over TV adverts lately? Snapping at your partner for no reason? Forgetting the name of your next-door neighbour or walking into a room and having no idea why?

If you’ve ever whispered to yourself, “What is happening to me?” please know this:

You are not going mad. It’s perimenopause. And you are not alone.

Thousands of women across the UK feel like they’re losing themselves in midlife, and yet far too many are struggling in silence. This blog is for every woman who’s wondered whether she’s just “not coping” or questioning her mental health, when in fact her hormones are shifting beneath her feet.

What Is Perimenopause?

Perimenopause is the transitional stage before menopause, where hormone levels, especially oestrogen and progesterone, begin to fluctuate. It can start as early as your late 30s or more commonly in your 40s, and may last several years before your periods stop completely.

And the symptoms? They can feel relentless, bizarre, and deeply personal and affect everything from your energy levels to your confidence.

Common (but rarely talked about) Perimenopause Symptoms

You might be experiencing any of the following:

  • Mood swings or anxiety that come out of nowhere

  • Sleep disturbances or waking at 3am with your mind racing

  • Overwhelming fatigue even after a decent night’s rest

  • Hot flushes or night sweats

  • Brain fog, forgetfulness or trouble concentrating

  • Changes in periods – heavier, lighter, irregular

  • Weight gain, especially around the middle

  • Low libido or vaginal dryness

  • Increased sensitivity or feeling more emotional than usual

These are just some of the 30+ recognised symptoms of perimenopause. And yet many women are told “it’s just stress” or “part of getting older.”

You Are Not Alone

Here’s what we want you to know:

  • You are not broken.

  • You are not weak.

  • And you are definitely not going mad.

Perimenopause affects around 13 million women in the UK, that’s nearly one in three. But because so many symptoms are dismissed or misunderstood, women are left feeling isolated and confused.

The truth? You’re part of a silent sisterhood navigating this intense life stage. And when we start to talk about it openly with our friends, daughters, partners and doctors, we lift the shame and stigma that have kept too many of us suffering in silence.

Why We Don’t Talk About It (And Why We Should)

For generations, menopause has been treated as something to be endured quietly. There’s a cultural silence around women’s health, especially when it comes to the emotional and mental changes that come with hormone shifts.

But that silence is costing women their confidence, careers, relationships and joy. We need to shift the narrative from “this is just how it is” to “this is happening, and I deserve support.”

The more we speak up, the more we empower other women to recognise the signs and seek help. Sharing your experience on social media or in conversation could be the lifeline another woman desperately needs.

Getting the Support You Deserve

You don’t need to suffer through perimenopause alone or in confusion. There are things that can help:

  • Track your symptoms to understand patterns

  • Speak to your GP and ask about HRT, blood tests or referrals

  • Prioritise rest, movement and nourishment - your body needs extra love right now

  • Talk to a menopause specialist or wellness coach for a tailored approach

  • Join a support group either online or in-person where you can be heard and validated

  • Educate your loved ones so they can better support you

A health and wellness coach can help you take a more holistic approach, understanding how nutrition, sleep, exercise and mindset all influence your hormonal health. It’s not about “fixing” you, but helping you feel like you again.

This Is A Life Phase – Not A Life Sentence

Yes, it can feel overwhelming. Yes, it can shake your identity. But perimenopause is not the end, it’s a transformation. With the right support, you can move through this stage stronger, wiser and more in tune with your body than ever before.

This is the beginning of a new chapter, one where you get to redefine what wellness means for you. You are still powerful. Still vibrant. And still worthy of joy and care.

Final Words: You Are Seen. You Are Valid. You Are Not Mad.

  • You are not going mad.

  • It’s perimenopause.

  • And you are not alone.

If you’re feeling like a stranger in your own skin, it’s time to stop blaming yourself and start getting curious. There is so much you can do, and you don’t have to do it alone.

Let’s talk more. Let’s share more. Let’s make sure the next generation of women feel informed, empowered, and supported when they reach this stage.
